Adding Data to the Advocacy Arsenal

By Kira-Leigh Kuhnert

To effectively bring about lasting change in the way the world sees, we need credible data. The launch of the IAPB Vision Atlas on World Sight Day 2017 has provided Orbis with an abundance of global information and statistics on eye health that can be used towards advocating for eye health in the countries where we work.

In bringing about lasting change, it is imperative that we build relationships and collaborate with policy makers, ministries of health and non-governmental organisations to ensure success in our projects. Advocacy plays an important role towards creating supportive policies for eye health and campaigning for public awareness and education around the importance of quality eye care.

By advocating for quality eye care, we further strengthen and build on the strong foundations that Orbis and its partners have been laying in the eye health sector for so many years. For training, health systems strengthening and surgical interventions to be sustainable, it is imperative to ensure that these best-practices and elements required for enabling environments are included in national, regional and international policies and directives.

Having a tool like the Vision Atlas, which provides searchable country and region-specific data, ensures that our advocacy engagements are relevant and current, setting the scene for our work towards touching lives through the gift of sight.
